    Mounting a Windows Share

Finally time get those Windows shares mounted so that we can access some files.

There are 2 ways 2 mount the Windows shares, either by highlighting the share (in this Corel) then clicking on the "Mount" button on the menu. Or by simply right clicking on the share and choose mount.

The mount dialog box opens with a bunch of cryptic settings. In other words, at this stage of the game....don't mess with them. Remember what I said about the world of hurt and frustration.

    An explanation of these settings

  • Service: This is simply the WIN2000/Corel share we want to mount.
  • Mount Point: This is simply a folder that Linux needs to mount the share to. Remember Linux does not use drive letter names such as C:, D:, E: etc. You will get a clearer picture as to what this means a bit further on.
  • UID and UID is your Linux user info. I have never had any reason to change this, neither should you at this point.
  • File Mode and Dir mode, accept these defaults.
  • SMB user and SMB password should be liniuxuser and your samba password.
  • Click on "Mount"

In the lower part of this window under "Resource", you should now see the mounted Windows share.

Now if you open Konqueror and browse to /home/linuxuser/mnt/Corel, you should see the WIN2000 pc's files!

Lets now mount the WIN2000 share called mp3 using the same steps as we did for the Corel share.

You will now see the contents of the WIN2000 mp3 share. (really this is not my music preferences / tastes....illustrative purposes only :-)

There we are, you are now able to do simple filesharing from Linux to Windows and Windows to Linux.

For more in-depth information and LinNeighborhood configuration, the developer has a FAQ and a readme page on his website.
