    LinNeighborhood Tour

When Lineighborhood opens you are greeted with this screen. As you can see, the menu layout is pretty much explanatory, however there are 2 noteworthy things to note.

    a) greplinux.dyndns.org is the linux pc's FQDN

    b) HOME is the workgroup name

Next, click on the Prefs tab on the main menu

The Preferences Scan tab shows several settings, for a small home/office network. The "Always scan as user" works in conjunction with the "Default User" setting below. For now, use the default settings as shown above.

Next, click on the Programs Tab

Again, use the default settings here, changing these will be asking for a world of hurt and frustration....don't say I did not warn you!

Next click on the Miscellaneous tab

    A few important settings here.

    1) The "Default User" is the user who you want to use to access the Windows share with. In this case, as mentioned in the beginning of this guide we are using a user named linuxuser. If you you choose to check the flag "Save Default Password" also you will not be prompted for the username and password in future sessions.

    2) Use 'ROOTMOUNTDIR/machine/share' as default mount point. Because Linux does not use drive letters, it requires somewhere to "mount" the drives ( more about this later). For now we are going use "/home/linuxuser/mnt/" as the default.

    3) "Memorize Mounted Shares /Remount on next Startup"  Think of this as the Windows equivelant as "Reconnect at login"

For all the other settings, leave as is for now. You will have ample opportunity to come back later and break things all by yourself!

Next click on the Post Mount tab

Here you can specify if you want a file manager to open when you mount your Windows shares. I leave this setting unchecked, I'll leave this one up to you.

Click on Save. Now click on the File menu and choose save preferences.

There you have it, a quick and dirty tour of LinNeighborhood. As you have seen there are several options that you can play with, however as mentioned as bove, you will have ample opportunity to come back later and break things all by yourself!
