Accessing Windows Files from a Linux PC

Up until this point we have focused on setting up Linux and Samba to share files for Windows pc's access. Well what about those Linux users who need to be able to access files on Windows pc's? Fortunately there is a great program called LinNeighborhood that functions in much the same way for Linux as Network Neighborhood does for Windows.

If you using a rpm based Linux distro such as Redhat or Mandrake, you can download the latest version of LinNeighborhood from here. The developers download page also has info on distro specfic downloads such as Debian and Slackware.

There is generic source code available if you are feeling adventurous and wish to compile it yourself. (It is one of the easiest programs to compile, great for the newbie!!) See the LinNeighborhood FAQ page for instructions.

Ok before we get started, a few details need to be clarified.

    1) You have your TCP/IP network setup working properly , and the samba-client software installed.

    2) You are familiar with creating shares on a Windows based pc, no matter the version. If not, its time for a refresher

    3) LinNeighborhood is now installed and you know to access it.

    4) The examples used for this guide are based on the following:

    a) Windows 2000 Professional pc with the Netbios name of win2000

    b) Win2000 pc has 2 shares Corel, and mp3.

    c) Linux pc and win2000 pc both have a user called linuxuser. (Win2000 linuxuser has admin rights).
